Marma Points

The guiding principal of Ayurveda is to prevent disease by harmonizing the bodys rhythm with nature. One way to create this balance and align the bodys healing energies is through marma point massage therapy. Marma is a Sanskrit word that means "hidden", or "secret". A marma point is a juncture on the human body where two or more types of tissue meet (ie. muscles, bones, joints, veins or ligaments). There are 107 marma points ranging in size from one to six inches in diameter. Moreso, marma points are intersections of the vital life force and prana, or breath.

In Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed that marma points house the three pillars of life, otherwise known as the doshas (vata, pitta and kapha). As a person ages, doshic imbalances begin to block the movement of free-flowing energy in the body, resulting in physical and mental discomfort and disease. Marma point massage cleanses blocked energy (chi) by either arousing or calming the doshas, and carries energetic information between the mind and the bodys organs and tissues. Each marma point has three receptors that align with the three doshas; these points are stroked in a deliberate sequence using specific essential oils.
